December is full of noise: flashing lights, endless lists, shopping deals, and the pressure to buy, do, and be more. Somewhere in the middle of all the holiday swirl, our hearts long for a joy that lasts longer than a gift tag, a memory that doesn’t collect dust.
What really makes the season feel like itself isn’t the presents or decorations; it’s the small moments we actually live—the ones that stay with us long after the wrapping paper is gone.
Why Experiences Matter
They stay in the heart. Experiences far outlast the thrill of new gadgets. At the end of life, you will remember experiences, not possessions.
They deepen relationships. Gifts may bring a smile, but experiences build connection. Cooking together, taking a drive through decorated streets, or simply sitting by the fire and talking creates stories that last long after the holidays are over.
They cultivate gratitude. When we focus on experiences, we notice the small things. These moments remind us that joy isn’t hidden in things we own; it’s found in the life we actually live.
How to Prioritize Experiences
You don’t have to overthink it. Choosing experiences over possessions can be simple, intentional, and even joyful.
-
Gift moments, not things.
Consider giving tickets to a concert, a membership to a museum, a day spent baking together, or a handwritten note promising a shared adventure. These gifts cost little but leave lasting impressions.
-
Slow down intentionally.
December can feel like a sprint. Pause. Take a quiet walk in crisp winter air, sip your coffee in peace, or simply spend a few minutes noticing the lights in your neighborhood. Presence is a gift you can give yourself and those around you.
-
Reflect before you buy.
Before adding another item to your home or cart, ask: Will this deepen my life or just occupy space? This pause can help you make choices that support joy rather than clutter.
Choosing Joy That Lasts
The Christmas story itself points to this truth: God didn’t arrive with gold or glitter, but quietly, humbly, in a stable. Presence, not possessions, changed the world. Perhaps that’s the invitation this December: to notice and value presence over presents, heart over hoarding, and shared moments over stuff.
This December, let’s give ourselves and others the gifts that linger: time, attention, presence, and shared experiences. Less truly can be more when it comes to the holidays. Choosing experiences over possessions invites a slower, simpler, and more joyful season. A season that doesn’t end when the last gift is unwrapped.
It doesn’t have to be perfect. It doesn’t have to be big. It just has to be present.
